Midnight at the oasis....

We were woken up at 6am by a noisy group of americans going early to Nazca. I went out and asked that guide in a strong Spanish accent if they could keep it down as it was only 6.30 am!

Had breakfast in a lovely little café by the oasis. The hotel was lovely and we managed to wrangle a discount so it was only a bit more expensive than staying in a hostel. Although we like staying in the hotel, we think we prefer hostels as there are more people to talk to in the evenings.

We´ve had pisco sours prepared with local brandy and they are more than a little nice! The food is basic but cheap, we can get a 2 course meal for about $4.

In the afternoon we went out on a dune buggy into the desert to go sandboarding. It was fantastic! The dune buggy was like being on a roller coaster only better. You are given a basic type of snowboard and go to the top of one of the dunes. Then you lie on the board and tobogan down head first. The dunes are really steep and sometimes you couldn´t see the bottom! Mum went first and screamed all the way down.

We had dinner at the same lovely place and bumped into Inka, a lovely German girl we met in Paracas who is travelling on her own, so it was nice to have a chat and a laugh with her. We are up early in the morning to go to Nazca for a flight over the lines. More than a little excited!

Penguins and an oasis in one day!

Well, it´s only been 2 days since I updated this, but it seems like a lot longer.

Yesterday we left Lima and travelled down the Panamerican Highway in what can only be described as obscene luxury. Our seats were more like beds, with a leg rest, almost fully reclining. We had our own rather camp attendent to wait on us as we sped along the tarmac, feeling like pampered lap dogs!

We arrived in Paracas, a tiny town on the pacfic ocean and secured some lovely and very cheap accomodation. We were then whisked away into the Atacama desert for a tour of the reserve. The desert goes right down to the ocean and is simply incredible. It has NEVER rained there.

This morning we were up early to go to the Islas Baliestas. These islands are home to large colonies of wildlife and were once at the heart of the Peruvian guano industry. It was incredible. We saw cormerants, boobies (hehehe), gulls, sea lions, and most exciting of all, penguins!!! We were so close you colud have almost reached out and taken one home!

We are now in Huacachina, an oasis in the middle of the desert surrounded by massive sand dunes. We are going out in a dune buggy tomorrow afternoon to go sand boarding, which looks like a lot of fun from what we´ve seen!

From here it´s on to Nazca and a flight in a pro-plane across the Nasca lines!!
Life´s so hard sometimes!

Tuesday 3 August 2010

Well we are here and just about in one piece, after a mammoth 30 hour journey.

Everything went according to plan, apart from Danielle suffering a crippling stomach upset that left her writhing in agony on the floor of Miami International Airport.

If you ever have to go via MIA a few words of advice - do not go via MIA.

We are all chilled and rested now, had a nice breakfast with some AMAZING coffee, that Sue really enjoyed and are about to head out into the rather chilly surroundings.

(P.S. sorry about this all sounding a wee bit formal - I cannot work out how to do an apostrophe on this weird Spanish keyboard!)

Sunday 1 August 2010

and they're off!!

It's 4:56am

Well, having had the most wonderful time at Eva and Dean's wedding I got home to discover that the cat had been in a fight and had a wound on his head. Mum had called the emergency vet and been told it would cost £140 just to look at him!

We decided that he was OK and would live. I on the other hand had eaten something that really didn't agree with me at the wedding and spent the next 15 mins hugging my porcelain friend.

Neither of us slept well , worrying about the dodgy alarm going off in time.

So here we are - tired, nauseous and raring to go!!

See ya in 4 weeks!!!

Our first hostel

This is where we will be staying in Lima for the first few nights.

Not bad for £6 a night!
